Historical Collections and Contemporary Jewellery:
New work by Helena Bogucki
Helena Bogucki is infinitely intrigued by collections. From the well catalogued and documented collections of museums chosen for their cultural significance, to the smaller, more personal collections of everyday people; items, possibly family heirlooms, selected for sentimental value and stored in a precious place.
As a jewellery designer living and working in Western Australia, Helena is particularly interested in documenting the history of Western Australia in a new format. A distinctive aspect of her work, is the research process used to create jewellery pieces. The Battye Library at the State Library of Western Australia has been a valuable tool to collect oral histories and photographs which form the social commentaries on which her work is based.
Currently the focus of her jewellery is telling the stories of the Midland Railway Workshops. Her jewellery pieces together aspects of this iconic Western Australian industrial landmark, and the past life of this icon as a centre for industrial training, design and making. Her work focuses on the individuals who are associated with this institution; the employees, families and social groups.
